I translated some of my favorite Japanese songs into English!
Oh darlin
Oh darlin
Oh darlin
Oh darlin
(Down)
If it’s just a small blemish,
I’ll eat it all for you.
Oh darling, who are you?
Clingling tight to reality.
If you’re doubting me,
I’ll go ahead and cut this throat of mine.
Oh darling, I’m not smart but,
I’ll give you something precious.
Standing in this aggravated city,
It may feel like we can’t hold true feelings.
In such an incongruous life,
You must get tired!
But darling, we’ll worry together.
I’ll give this lifetime for you.
The fear that you cannot live with your heart as it is,
you continue to blame on others.
If you suddenly realize,
you’re struggling in a prison you call “self”—
I’m just the same.
No matter how much we understand each other,
lonely nights are sure to come.
Oh darling, surely these voids won’t ever disappear.
I’ve used many things as my stepping stone,
But I think I finally found what I mustn’t leave behind.
The sillier you behave around me,
The more gentle I feel.
Oh darling, let me hear the story of your dreams,
Everytime we meet.
Love isn’t something you can give or take,
It’s something that’s just there.
Singing in the city breeze,
Just throw away that peculiar pride,
This is where it begins.
Despair, disappointment, why are you faltering?
Freedom, hope, dreams, courage,
It’s right there—
Take a look at your feet!
Falling in love which takes its own course..
Even if at times, someone gets hurt,
My heart won’t ache every time.
For every time I empathize,
It’s my own heart which gets stabbed.
But still.. still people long to live as they are,
Even if they get hurt time and time again.
If you suddenly realize,
You’re trapped in a prison you call “self”
We’re all the same—I’m just the same.
This shapeless thing we call “love”,
It’s always hard to convey.
So darling, this song with no name,
Is forever dedicated to you.
Only 3 springs have passed since our graduation,
and next to me, I still have that same smile.
On your bike, we sped to my house on that road—
We now cruise on that same road, looking at the stars through the sun-roof
After you drop me off, as I watch you turn the corner,
You would always shine your brake lights 5 times—
your way of saying “ai-shi-te-ru” (I love you)
Surely the years will go with our emotions unchanged;
Only with you can I hold this way.
The map of our future I drew in my heart—
See, everything is unfolding just as I predicted.
At times we open those albums,
Laughing at the pictures of our youths.
How much time together have we spent?
Even these days which mindlessly float by..
Bumping our helmets 5 times—our signal of affection
Though the signal has changed, I still love you
just the same.
Surely the years will go by with feelings unchanged
Only with you can I feel this way
The map of our future I drew in my heart—
See, everything is unfolding just as I predicted.
See, everything is unfolding just as I predicted..
In order to survive, all organisms must eat food. Foraging is the term we use to describe the behaviour of searching for food. The food that an organism eats can depend on the abundance of the food, and the amount of energy one can obtain from the food.
Sex, is another essential behaviour that organisms partake in, as it enables an organism to pass on their genes. It can be random, such as in humans, or cyclical such as in certain species of birds. The time an organism reproduces can depend on the availability of food which favors organisms which reproduces so that their young is born when food is most abundant.
Finally, sleep is something which is also essential for our survival. It restores our brains and allows us to function acutely for long periods of time. Some species sleep daily in short functions, while others can sleep for mother longer time such as polar bears and hibernation.
Food, sex, and sleep may be the three most essential skills we have to survive.
If Natural selection was absolute, it would always favor against altruism. But, it turns out that helping others at the expense of the well-being of yourself can pay-off when you’re the one that needs help from time to time. As natural selection selected for the alleles which contributed to altruism, the organisms which did not exhibit these types of behaviors did not pass on their genes, thus erasing the characteristic. Honey bees and vampire bats are examples of altruistic organisms.
1. Sonogram 1 and 2 both include a rapidly fluctuating frequency which rises and drops in a short matter of time. Sonogram 1 consists of six different types of sound, whereas sonogram 2 consists of only 3. The average frequency at which the song is played is similar for both songs 1 and 2.
2. Song 3 shown on sonogram 3 plays at a higher frequency on average than sonogram 1 and 2 representing songs 1 and 2. Compared to sonogram 1 and 2, the lines of sonogram 3 are thicker, indicating that the volume of the sound was also higher on average on sonogram 3.
b. The song of the white-crowned sparrow is both innate and learned. Sonogram 3, which shows the song of a bird which was reared and was not exposed to the same environmental factors as birds 1 and 2, still had a very similar song pattern as bird 2 indicating that the song was to a large extent innate. However, sonogram 1 which is from a different population from the other two birds, show slight variations in the song pattern indicating that external factors have influenced its song. This means that it had learned the pattern that it currently sings.
3. Both sonograms IV and V start from a high frequency and end in a lower frequency. Sonogram V shows a long continuous note played at the beginning whereas sonogram V shows a succession of short sounds.
b. Both sonograms V, I, and II start off with a long note at the beginning. However, whereas this long note shows at least 1 rapid decrease and increase in frequency for sonograms I and II, the long note in the beginning does not show any rapid changes in frequency for sonogram V. Sonogram V also starts at a high frequency and ends at a low frequency, whereas sonogram I and II does not.
c. One reason is because bids identify potential mates of their own species with the songs. If a species imitated the song from another species, it would have trouble attracting mates from the same species and passing on their genes. Another reason may be because the birds may attract certain predators which may be attracted to certain bird songs. All species are adapted to have some defense against their natural predators, but by imitating a song from another species, they may attract predators that they are less able to defend themselves against.
d. This is evidence for mostly learned development of birdsong, as a bird was able to overwrite the genetic code for singing the song of their species, and learn the song of another bird which was in the same aviary. However, the learned song from the white-crowned sparrow still showed similarities with the normal songs of its own species, indicating that the innate tendency to sing the song of its own species did not completely disappear.

1. Another method would be to put food into the tubes.
2. The trend showed that for all species, the majority went towards the scented tubes. Oniscus osellus and Armadillidium vulgare had the greatest number of woodlice which moved towards the scented tubes at both at around 68%. Porcellio scaber had the lowest rate which moved towards the scented at around 62%. However, some still moved towards the unscented tubes.
3. The woodlice must have chemoreceptors which can distinguish between scents.
4. a. The woodlice might enter the scented tube because it could indicated potential mates to reproduce with.
b. When resources are scarce, woodlice may move towards the unscented tubes to avoid competition for resources.
Neurobiology is the study of the nervous system of an animal. They are used to respond to stimuli such as pain. Behavior is the pattern of responses to in an animal. The simplest behavior of an animal is the reflex.
When one steps on a tack, the pain receptor neurons at the nerve endings of sensory neurons are stimulated. Impulses pass from the pain receptors up the leg through the sensory neurons towards a synapse at the central nervous system. The impulse continues through a relay neuron which moves across another synapse and through a motor neuron which travels back to the foot. Finally, it connects to a muscle (effector), which is stimulated to flex and move away from the pain.
Pain receptors do not pass through the brain as it would take too much time and the damage would have already been done. All of this is called the reflex arc.
More than 1 synaptic neuron can form a synapse with a post-synaptic neuron. This means that one pre-synaptic neuron will usually not be enough to can an action potential in the post-synaptic neuron. However, one neuron can repeatedly send action potentials, in which case, a action potential can be stimulated in the post-synaptic neuron.
There are excitatory and inhibitory NT which can either depolarize or hyper-polarize a post-synaptic neuron making it easier and harder to cause an action potential respectively. The net result of all the excitatory and inhibitory signals is what shapes our decisions. It is also what can affect our personalities, although this can be controlled with psychoactive drugs.
The peripheral nervous system comprises all of the nerves outside the central nervous system. Is consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems which are often opposites of each other. When bright light is shown in the eye, the parasympathetic system causes the pupils to constrict. When there is less light, the sympathetic system causes the pupil to dilate to enable more light to pass through the pupil. These functions are controlled by the medulla oblongata. If light is shown in the eye and no change occurs, we can assume that the medulla oblongata is damaged, and in worse case scenarios, the patient is brain-dead. However, because being brain-dead does not necessarily mean that the patient is not living, it raises ethical issues and debates as to what would be considered a “dead” being.
